Blogs Worth Reading on a Daily Basis – Part 2
In our first installment yesterday we introduced you to our ten favorite Apple, Design, Electronics and Entertainment blogs. In Part 2 of our blogs worth reading on a daily basis series, we offer our thoughts and analysis of blogs in the Japanese, Security, Technology and Startup categories, hopefully exposing you to a blog or two you were not previously familiar with. Sit back and allow the TechMiso crew to once again point you and your browser to a number of excellent blogs we find quite beneficial.
Japan
Asiajin is one of the few blogs focused entirely on Asian startups, sites and technology oriented news, most notably with a Japanese twist. There is a wealth of Japanese related technology news published by Asiajin, and the guys behind the site offer wonderful write-ups. If you are yearning for Japan-related tech news in English, then Asiajin is definitely worth checking out.
TOKYOMANGO is probably my all-around favorite Japan dedicated blog. Their content is not only top notch but their writing style is a lot of fun to read.
Stippy does not write a lot of articles, but when they do publish they are of very high quality, and usually of exceptional length. Stippy is well known for writing well written, well researched articles not seen elsewhere on the web.
Security
27B Stroke 6 is one of the only Wired blogs worth continued reading these days. Each and every day is another new privacy or security horror story, rich with detailed analysis of the situation and quotes from those with direct knowledge of the situation. Although touted as a blog, 27B Stroke 6 is written from a much more journalistic stance, and essentially reads like a newspaper column. This actually works quite well for the site, especially considering the type of content being covered.
Schneier on Security is an obligatory read if you are interested in following security, whether information security or physical security. Schneier is one of the worlds great cryptographic minds but also is the CTO of a security company, and his insight in to the world of security from a variety of angles is invaluable. Plus, I love how he gives the TSA such a hard time for enacting the inane security theater policies they publish.
Evolution of Security is the official blog of the TSA, where they publish their propaganda, hoping American citizens are dumb enough to believe and fall for their policies, no matter how idiotic. It is interesting to read the various rationalizations they attempt to offer for their wonky policies. Even more fun to read are their articles attempting to humanize the very agents who make traveling through American airports a living hell.
Technology
Lifehacker is not a true technology blog but just about all the life hacking tips offered center around technology of some form or fashion. Lifehacker is one of the best resources for locating inexpensive software, tips, tricks and other goodies aimed at increasing your computing welfare. Definitely one of the best blogs today.
Ajaxian offers news and reports on the wonderful world of AJAX. If you are a programmer who enjoys AJAX then Ajaxian is a wonderful resource worth tapping.
Slashdot, although considerably less relevant than it was years ago, is still an excellent source of technology news and information. What makes Slashdot a worthwhile read is not necessarily the articles themselves but the comments – mostly humorous, each story does end up having a number of very insightful comments posted, which end up being more informative than the articles themselves. You definitely will not find Slashdot breaking news so do not be surprised to see weeks old news posted as if it were mere hours old.
TorrentFreak is probably the best blog dedicated to BitTorrent and P2P issues. TorrentFreak is definitely not your average torrent blog, nor are the stories what one would assume a blog dedicated to this subject matter would write. Their analysis and critical stories on both sides of the P2P debate are well written and worth reading.
Startups
TechCrunch is the 800 pound gorilla in the startup space. Although TechCrunch is obligatory reading every day, I have unfortunately found the site has lost most of its appeal these days. I really enjoyed the site exponentially more when they focused solely on new startups, writing up detailed posts about not-yet-launched web startups, offering screenshots and insightful analysis about the new ventures. Still, TechCrunch is a must read if you are interested in startups.
Venture Beat, like TechCrunch, is another daily must read, peering in the wonderfully exciting world of web startups. The writing on Venture Beat is top notch, and these guys probably offer the most critical view of the world they cover.
Mashable is your social media guide, covering startups and social media. Ripe with excellent news coverage, a lot of times breaking stories, Mashable also continues to publish exceptionally valuable HOWTO and tutorial articles covering a variety of social media topics.
Webware is a CNET property devoted to web startups, often times catching news not run at any of the three preceding sites. Definitely worth a read, especially if you are jonesin for startup coverage.

Tomorrow we will be back with the final installment in this series, covering the catch-all Blogroll category, waxing poetic about blogs our close friends run and closing out with a list of our favorite blogs. As with our first installments, are there any Japanese, Security, Technology or Startup blogs which you find valuable enough to be added to our list?
Thanks for the lists Scott. Its nice to add a few feeds into the Reader that might be useful. Perhaps Rich has some additional blogs to share as well?
Hi Joshua. I'll work up a quick list and — maybe place it under my about page. I can say now though that a lot of what I read is not just from the blogs, but more in news sites and company news release pages. I'm always on the hunt for that obscure news source…. Any tips!?
