Blogs Worth Reading on a Daily Basis – Part 3
In our second installment of our “blogs worth reading” series we introduced you to a number of Japan, Security, Technology and Startup blogs we thoroughly enjoy reading on a daily basis. Coupled with our first installment highlighting Apple, Design, Electronics and Entertainment blogs, we have introduced you to 24 sites we feel are worthy of your time. In our final installment we will be covering the catch-all Blogroll category as well as blogs from some of our real-life friends. Once again, hang tight and allow the us Miso lovers to once again point you and your browser to a few excellent blogs.
Blogroll
Boing Boing is one of my favorite all-around blogs because of the vast array of content they cover, from the highly peculiar to steampunk, to privacy to your rights online. If you think it’s weird or cool, or even both at the same time, then chances are it has hit Boing Boing. If you have never visited the site then you are definitely missing out on quality content!
A VC is a wonderful blog authored by Fred Wilson, a VC and principal of Union Square Ventures. His insightful commentary on the Venture Capital world is both unique and interesting. Fred Wilson offers a valuable and candid perspective on an industry feared and adored simultaneously. I find it fascinating to read about how VC’s arrive at decisions on what startups to fund and why they chose to do so. If you are looking for startup funding and want to know some of the ins-and-outs then I definitely recommend checking out A VC.
A Whole Lotta Nothing, written by Matt Haughey of MetaFilter fame, is only sporadically published. However, when Matt does write his articles are articulate and focus on everyday problems that the everyday layman would be interested in reading. He does not solely focus on technology, often times writing about his own life, but I still find A Whole Lotta Nothing an enjoyable and worthwhile read.
Blog Maverick is a blog written by Mark Cuban, the peculiarly successful Dallas Mavericks owner. Mark has a vested interest in technology businesses and the NBA, aiming his keyboard at those two topics quite often. Although Cuban has a really whack perspective on a lot of issues, it is obvious the man is intelligent and quite a capable writer even though he does seem “out there” quite often. No matter what, his odd opinions are worth reading because of that very reason, which makes Blog Maverick a compelling read.
Daring Fireball would probably be better classified as an Apple blog because John Gruber’s exceptional blog is definitely all about Mac nerdery. When Gruber is on, he is on – his eloquence and ability to get straight and to the point are unmatched. If there were a single person who I would admit to having writer envy for, it would be Gruber. His Mac articles are some of the best reading you will find online, offering detailed analysis not seen on any other blog. If you are not already reading Daring Fireball then you are missing out on some of the best writing the web has to offer.
Lifestream Blog is a blog devoted entirely to the idea of lifestreaming or social aggregation. If you like topics like FriendFeed, Socialthing, Tumblr or exotic new services devoted to lifestreaming then you need to be reading the Lifestream Blog.
Plagiarism Today covers just what it sounds like – plagiarism. In addition to what many might consider a mundane topic, the blog also covers copyright-related issues as well. While some of the articles are a tad on the copyright-nazi side of the house, the information is highly valuable and worth reading, especially if these topics interest you. If you never thought reading about plagiarism would be interesting, give the blog a shot – you might just enjoy it!
Slight Paranoia is another blog I probably have miscategorized – it probably should be placed in security rather than blogroll. The blog is entirely devoted to electronic-based security and privacy issues, touching on many issues close to home. In a recent article, the author covered the use of cookies by The White House because of their use of YouTube, and how such use is potentially harmful and possibly even in violation of certain federal statutes. Chris, the author behind the blog, is highly analytical and even goes so far as to make Freedom of Information Acts requests for information in order to get to the bottom of a variety of important, hot issues.
Friends
- DJ Designs is an old buddy who I know from back in the good old deviantART days. He was the artist responsible for DAv3, probably the most beloved deviantART design ever. Daniel has some wicked photography in addition to his awesome art.
- EndEffect is another blog run by a art buddy I know from back in the day. George Smith, aka Precurser, is one of my favorite abstract artists. If you are in need of new wallpaper for your iPhone then check out EndEffect for some really sick stuff!
- Evan Sims is a video game designer and programmer from Illinois who just so happens to love open source, oolong tea and nu-metal. Why nu-metal? No clue – maybe IL has nothing better to offer? Anyhow, Evan write about game design and other interesting topics.
- Yorick Peterse is a regular Miso lover here at TechMiso. He just relaunched his personal blog after redesigning the bad boy, and I have to say it looks fantabulous.
- Philadelph is a photography blog by my close friend Vincent Brown, dedicated to imagery in Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love. Vince is a wonderful freelance photographer who is more than capable of capturing the essence of one of the oldest cities in the U.S. If you like photography then definitely check out what my buddy Vince is shooting these days.
I initially intended on wrapping up with a list of my favorite blogs but have decided to keep things where they are. There really is no point in writing up a list of what I think is best because the list is ever-changing based on a variety of factors. Essentially, all the highlighted blogs could at one time or another be on the list – they are all worthwhile, exceptional reads and should be given a fair shake by any Miso lover.

At this point I would like to open up the comments as a free-for-all to link to blogs we have not yet highlighted but you find valuable to share with the community of Miso lovers. Got a blog we’ve failed to cover? Post a link and a quick 140 character or less write-up for all to see.
