Good point on the problems Microsoft would face from a hardware perspective. I believe that if Microsoft were to suddenly start producing both the hardware and the software then the industry would once again be up in arms, as they were in the late 90's. It would be tough from a legal perspective too methinks.

But yeah, if Microsoft can't even get the XBOX 360 right then they would most certainly have issues with a PC.

So far, this is the best article I have read tackling this subject. Very fun to read, and you pointed out somethings I completely missed.

Microsoft is going to have a hard time if they do get into the hardware side of things too. Look at how many problems the xbox 360's hardware has had. Thats just a small preview of how Microsoft has handled hardware.
