Ashton Kutcher – Ascent To ‘Twitter’ Stardom – 1 Million And Rising
While the rest trudge through Following and being Followed on Twitter, Ashton Kutcher rolled out a full-on Tweet assault and became the first Twitterer ever to rack up 1 million Followers.
Kutcher attained his coveted Twitter status just a few thousand Followers ahead of runner-up @CNNBrk who [even with Larry King] couldn’t rally the Twitter world to a million in time.
Did Kutcher (known as @aplusk on Twitter) pull off a rerun of President Obama’s grassroots campaign?
Like a virus, Kutcher exploited all corners of the web. He hit the virtual pavement — recruiting his undying fan base for World Malaria Day. And if he hit a million Twitter Followers before CNN, Kutcher promised to donate 10,000 mosquito nets to the cause.
He rallied new fans and those fans rallied more new fans. Some rallied on the streets in front of CNN’s Los Angeles bureau. Together with Kutcher, his Followers sparked a Million Man March.
Kutcher didn’t stop at Twitter though. He dragged his campaign onto the likes of YouTube, Ustream Tv, MySpace and Facebook. (Over 1.2 million fans follow Kutcher on Facebook alone.)
Kutcher, along with CNN and [almost] Britney Spears, thrust Twitter into the limelight yet again. Giving the social media site instant celebrity status and driving the site’s popularity off the charts over this last week — blowing by 1,000,000 followers for a single Twitter account.
Not finding your favorite celebrity on Twitter? Then that celebrity [and their management] must have failed their marketing 101 class. Oprah is on Twitter. As is Hugh Jackman, Richard Branson, Coldplay and a lengthy list of others.
But what if you’re not famous? Is Twitter an online social tool you need to be a part of?
Consider that Twitter ranks #3 in social sites behind only Facebook and MySpace. Then look at web analytics company Compete.com’s monthly stats for Twitter: Unique Monthly Visitors- 14,031,985 & Total Monthly Visits- 98,685,480, the answer is, Yes, like it or not, you need Twitter as one of your online social tools.
If you’re driven toward expanding your social web and want to tap mass markets like Ashton Kutcher showed us how to do this past week, Twitter is [by far] one of the first and most important places to get started.
Twitter drives traffic. They drive it so well that they touch every nook and cranny of the web — from blogs to social networks, to news portals and search engines.
