Apple Fumbles With 10.5.7 Software Update
In what’s turned into a fairly peculiar rollout, Apple committed a Microsoft-like faux pas and ignited an uproar with their latest patch release for OS X. Just over the last two weeks since Software Update prompted users to install a critical rollup – Apple’s online forums are on fire and it is quite apparent that 10.5.7 is wreaking havoc on basic 10.5.x functionality.
Apple’s latest move is shaking up user confidence in Apple’s patch management practices.

Maybe Apple should put a few of those PR dollars into full testing before pushing out these releases. It’s good to solve security issues and all, but these kinds of bugs can sometimes cause as many headaches as malware.
Issues like Macbooks not waking up after the lid is closed are a first for some Apple fans.
aeonite on Apple Discussions from Seattle, WA-
Four times in the past three days, since installing 10.5.7, my Mac has suddenly gone completely unresponsive. This has never happened before.
From where I sit, my Macbook’s AirPort interface suffered most from this latest update – failing to connect with my Time Capsule unless [every time] first running network diagnostics. Along with my AirPort problems, screensaver comes back intermittently with a wide open unlocked desktop. Other small glitches like an app not launching in front of all other windows — I’m forced to command-tab to find it. And last noticeable bug: Time Machine backups were failing midstream.
Others have taken painstaking steps to remedy their 10.5.7 woes.
Keith Williams on Apple Discussions-
I’ve reset PRAM and CSM, tried various combinations of enabling and disabling the option, changing screensaver, using the Keychain “lock” menu bar item — to no avail. The screensaver kicks in, but moving the mouse or tapping the keyboard stops the screensaver and does not ask for my password. The only thing that does work is the “hack” of “/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu\ Extras/User.menu/Contents/Resources/CGSession -suspend.”
This worked fine prior to 10.5.7 and I’m at a loss as to what to try next.
Keith has put in more effort than most have the time or desire to even consider doing.
As for my outstanding 10.5.7 issues and as a paid Apple Care customer, I’m not ready to comb through Apple Discussions and ‘try’ everyone’s suggested medicine. I’ll wait until my schedule allows me to call Apple, sit on hold for a tech and walk through whatever troubleshooting steps they have in store. Or better yet, Apple will quickly and responsibly push a new Software Update that squashes these outstanding 10.5.7 bugs.
On a parting shot- I’m afraid Apple still isn’t ready for the enterprise.
