State of the Miso Soup – 31 Days Later

Miso SoupIt was a mere 31 days ago when Rich and I launched TechMiso, our tribute to technology evangelism and Miso Soup. The site is still in its adolescence but continues to display signs of a small but thriving community of people interested both in TechMiso directly and in Rich and I personally. Throughout the excitement of our birth, what has the last 31 days of existence brought to TechMiso?

The most obvious, or what should be the most obvious to our visitors, is the inclusion of a new writer – our close friend Jimmy Mills. Jimmy asked to write for TechMiso on a part time basis after our launch on January 1, 2009. He has composed some extremely well written articles which have collected an honest amount of comments. After all, we desire conversation at TechMiso, so if one of our writers is able to capture people’s attention and subsequently stimulate intelligible commenting then we must be doing something right!

Outside of the addition of another writer, here are some interesting stats about the number of articles, comments and authors:

  • Total authors: 3
  • Total articles written: 44
  • Total posted comments: 291
  • Total comment spam captured: 29
  • Total tags used: 146 (average of 3+ per article)
  • Total articles by Jimmy: 4
  • Total articles by Rich: 18
  • Total articles by Scott: 22

Overall the stats are pretty even with the exception of Jimmy, and that’s only because he has been onboard for a short time now. I think 44 articles over the course of 31 days is a decent number to start out with. We’re not pumping out multiple stories each and every day for a couple of reasons – 1) we have full-time jobs and are unable to write articles with a TechCrunch-like volume and 2) we take time and care of massaging our articles before they’re posted. This is not an article assembly line!

TechMiso is doing fairly decent from a statistics perspective, especially for having been alive for a mere 31 days with virtually zero marketing whatsoever. We enlisted Mint to assist us with traffic statistics – in my opinion, the best statistics software available today, hands down. Here’s what we’re looking at for our first 31 days:

  • Total hits: 9712
  • Total unique visitors: 1239
  • Daily average: 313
  • Total RSS subscribers: 35

These stats are certainly not going to allow us to immediately monetize the site and retire. Quite the contrary in fact. However, as I mentioned, for being only 31 days old and not using any marketing whatsoever, this is not a bad spot to be in.

Where do we go from here? Nowhere but UP, right? Our goals are to continue writing and enjoying ourselves. The moment it stops being fun is the moment we are going to call it quits. We expect the fun to last years!

We do have some lofty goals for TechMiso. Monetization is one of our more important goals. A little return for the hard work is always nice. We expect to continue writing at the same level we are today, potentially slowly increasing the number of articles you see daily, although for the next 28 days I expect our output to be roughly equal to January.

Please continue to visit and offer advise, comments and words of encouragement. While we do enjoy writing for ourselves, the TechMiso vision is a thriving community whereby the conversation is enjoyed by writers and visitors alike. Just as you need us, we need you!

Lastly, thanks to all our visitors and supporters – you guys rock. Here’s to an exciting second month of existence and fun for all.

Cheers!
