I used to have a MCSE and MCP certification in addition to a few others. I found that, at the time, they were largely unnecessary other than to help your resume stand out from the rest. These days, however, I and other networking colleagues will not hire a person to fit a position unless they have the certifications to attest to at least possessing some kind of demonstrated knowledge. It's easy for a person to forge experience and references; it's a little bit more complex to forge certification.
