Tech evangelism and Miso soup like no other
Jim Mills
Since the 4th grade Jim has been tinkering with computers. It all started in the early years writing programs in BASIC on a TI-99. During his high school years Jim spent his summers lifeguarding and cooking in the Poconos. Jim developed his passion for re-organization and process improvement during these years. He then spent the immediate years after high school working in the mountains, maximizing his time off and working as little as possible. The days of rock-climbing and canoeing all day were great but he started to get hungry for actual food and a hungry for a career where he could make a difference. Jim ended up getting out of dodge via the US Navy and ended up in Japan. He started out in sub broadcast comms, but weaseled his way into LAN management and eventually to the Japan Regional NOC. Upon departed the Navy he was offered a contractor job back at the NOC and has been kicking butt there ever since. A few years of Network Management and then Jim crossed over to the dark side, Information Assurance. He currently manages the Information Security Suites for all of ONE-NET Far East.

Truce in the Megapixel War?
Apr 15th
This has been an exciting few weeks for us camera lovers. On March 25th Canon announced the 15.1 Megapixel Canon EOS Digital Rebel T1i. Yesterday, Nikon took the wraps off the D5000, which has many of the same features as Nikon’s very successful D90 and adds an articulating 2.7 inch LCD screen. Both of these cameras offer excellent image quality, high ISO performance, and the ability to shoot high definition video. The best part, both of these cameras are under $900 with a kit lens!
Developing a “Policy Program”
Feb 20th
When creating a quality defense in depth strategy , you must not forget to build a quality “policy program”. A “policy program” is not just a binder, wiki, or web page with all of your current policies categorized neatly by date and purpose. A “policy program” will include the drafting of the policies, the communicating of the policies to all of your user community, enforcement of the policies, and validation that the policy is meeting its defined goal. We often see policy programs that only encompass one or two of these steps and administrators wondering why their policies are ineffective. In order to create a successful program you need to utilize all of the steps in the policy program framework.
Gigapixels For The Masses
Feb 12th
We are sure that just about everyone has seen the gigapixel image from Obama’s innauguration. Tech blogs are jumping all over this as the next big thing without realizing that gigapixel imaging has been around for years.
The technology is getting more advanced and cheaper, but it is hardly a new concept.
Adapting To A Changing Tech Economy
Jan 27th
In the past month we have seen Apple’s stock sink to its lowest level in years, Microsoft announce a 5,000 person job cut, and Sony report their biggest ever loss in a single year. The last quarter of 2008 was a let-down for both brick-and-mortar and online retailers. What does this mean for you as a consumer in 2009?
The average consumer makes a major tech purchase every six to twelve months. The current economic crisis has everyone seriously looking at cost vs. benefit on their next round of purchases. They will be asking themselves if a new computer is absolutely necessary or should they be simply updating components, such as memory. Do they really need a full blown laptop or will a netbook meet their needs? Do they purchase now or adopt a “wait and see” attitude?
Know Thy Power User!
Jan 17th
Last Saturday night I was shopping in Kawasaki, which offers the tech geek a variety of stores all withing walking distance of each other. There is Yodobashi, BIC, Sakuraya, and a host of mom and pop stores. I tend hit the major electronics often, to see what new goodies I might spend my hard earned money on.
As I am walking through BIC Camera I notice that Softbank Mobile has a new USB 3G Data Card. It catches my eye since it looks good and offers 7.2Mbs speed. I think to myself maybe Softbank is finally getting their act together and will really support us “power users”. After all, they did bring the iPhone over to Japan.
Obama’s New Blackberry? Ugly Gets The Job Done!
Jan 15th
There’s a lot of talk lately about Obama’s Blackberry and what choices he will have once he enters his presidency. What initially shocked me was the lack of understanding by the general public when it comes to secure devices.
Engadget shed some light on the only two devices NSA has approved for use by government and DoD personnel.
In The Market For A New Digital Camera?
Jan 14th
When you walk towards my cubicle at work, you are greeted by a 16×20 print of the Daibutsu (Big Buddha) I shot. I get the usual “what camera did you use to take that shot,” followed up by the “what camera should I buy since I am in the market now?” After this happened for the third time I realized I was basically giving out the same advice to everyone. Now I am sharing this helpful assistance with the masses.
Let’s first start out with my background in photography. A friend of mine got me interested in shooting during our off-time. I bought a Sony DSC-V1 and was also using a friend’s Canon EOS-3 film camera with slide film. I was torn between the ease of use on digital and the system flexibility and lens choice on the SLR. After a few weeks doing this balancing act I decided to purchase a DSLR.
