  • Navy Federal Credit Union Web Site Operating with Security Issue

Online banking users are hopefully aware of the need to login to their banks web-based system using secure means, such as via a web site protected using SSL encryption. Every legitimate bank offers such protection, normally disallowing customers the ability to login via unsecure means. But not every bank appears to be conscious of the myriad of potential security risks associated with their site. Navy Federal Credit...
  • Chrome OS - Google Gorilla To Eat Microsoft's Breakfast

Heads up Balmer, The boys at Google are on the hunt. Larry and Sergey are planning a strategic strike at the heart of Microsoft's flagship product, Windows. In a recent announcement on The Official Google Blog, Google says they are ramping up a new hopeful in the OS market -- Chrome OS. If Chrome OS runs with speeds anything like Google Chrome (the browser), then Microsoft is staring up the nose of a 300-pound...
  • I Refuse to Upgrade to an iPhone 3GS

A few short weeks ago Apple released the highly anticipated upgrade to their flagship iPhone 3G, apparently aptly dubbed the iPhone 3GS. The “S” is presumably for speed because the updated product is touted as being twice as fast as its predecessor. Even though the new phone is the most advanced mobile phone on the market today, yours truly will be sticking with the trusty iPhone 3G. It was love at first...
  • HOWTO Install Cherokee, MySQL, PHP and WordPress on Ubuntu 9.04...

Cherokee is a smoking hot up-and-coming web server capable of hanging with Apache while consuming exponentially less resources than its older sibling. As we wrote earlier, Cherokee saved TechMiso from Apache scalping all available RAM, ultimately allowing us to continue to provide the same service we provide today but with far better memory consumption. Learn how to install and configure Cherokee, MySQL, PHP and...
  • HOWTO Configure Apache for SSL with DoD CAC Authentication on Ubuntu...

Administering Linux servers is an art form not mastered by many because it is mostly command-line driven. Windows on the other hand, while a highly complex beast, has taught most administrators that configuring can be accomplished through a simple point-and-click interface. One of the more difficult Linux tasks is properly configuring an Apache web server - the sheer power Apache can wield is evident in the...
  • Dying For A Job?

I'm not talking about being out of work.  I'm talking about six feet under.  If your job predominately consists of sitting in a chair and moving only your hands all day long, it may just be killing you. The human body was not designed to be sedentary; it was made to move.  And that is why I say that exercise is the key to good health.  Being thin and trim does not necessarily equate to being healthy. ...
  • Does U.S. Mobile Carrier AT&T Rule All App Store Applications?

Earlier this week the internet was abuzz over Apple rejecting the official Google Voice (GV) iPhone app. This story was quickly followed by Apple removing every GV-enabled app already available in the App Store. The official GV app and all previously approved GV-enabled applications appear to have been removed from all international App Stores. Based on many accounts, the culprit behind this dastardly deed is none...
  • Winning In A Competitively Staffed IT Environment

Have you been at a job where you admired a successful IT colleague of yours? Someone you were amazed by? Maybe even blown away by their level of proficiency? Or did you feel threatened? Were you ready to develop this new relationship or did you quickly...
  • HOWTO Install Squid Web Proxy Server with Active Directory...

Web Proxy servers are an essential aspect of a solid network perimeter defense strategy. Dying For A Job?

Fat BastardI’m not talking about being out of work.  I’m talking about six feet under.  If your job predominately consists of sitting in a chair and moving only your hands all day long, it may just be killing you.

The human body was not designed to be sedentary; it was made to move.  And that is why I say that exercise is the key to good health.  Being thin and trim does not necessarily equate to being healthy.  Studies have shown that overweight, active people are generally healthier than thin, inactive people.  Why is that?  Because our bodies are actually a lot like machines.  If you don’t lubricate it and keep it moving, it will eventually cease to function.  Plain and simple.  Use it or lose it!

RSS Teasers FAIL To Please

RSS Teasers FAIL To PleaseNobody likes a tease, right? OK, maybe sometimes and for short periods of time, sure, everyone likes a good tease. Maybe it can be attributed to spicing up ones life. But if you think for a second you can get away with teasing RSS subscribers back to an HTML-laden website, get ready for them never reading your content again.

For those who rely heavily on picking up web content through RSS [like me], there’s little time for websites anymore. My first thought when I see a teaser feed is — feel lucky if that teaser drives even one person back to the main site — and better luck yet if you can ever track and prove that it actually does.

Pay Us Because We Suck

Pay us Because We SuckOver the past decades a lot has been changed, from the first colour TV to mobile phones, and from the internet to mind control devices. Of course, not everything has changed, especially the news papers sticking to their old traditions.

Looking at how many other services, objects and other things evolved over the past decades, especially if you look at how many services embraced the internet, it’s shocking to see the newspapers haven’t done this in a way they should. They still rely heavily on printed forms of news. Not that this means it’s the end of the world, but it’s getting a bit out of control if they fail to improve their medium and want us to pay for it.

Things OS X - screenshotOne of the most hotly contested areas of development these days is task management. Even though there are a myriad of web and desktop applications available there is no clear winner, especially with the proliferation of mobile computing. Just one moment of browsing the “productivity” category in the iTunes App Store will confirm such. So how do you decide which route to take?

TechMiso - $1 Blank CD Could Lead To 10-year Prison Term

Like the woman found guilty of illegally downloading music from the internet and fined a monster $1.9 million USD, a man in Japan may face stiff penalties for downloading, stealing and monetizing 50,000 customer accounts from his employer, Mitsubishi UFJ.

News agencies in Japan are reporting that a former acting manager at Mitsubishi UFJ Securities has admitted to data theft and illegal computer access during his tenure in the systems department.

Free green and red Crab Apples in bowl creative commonsWhy, you might ask, would anyone who frequents TechMiso want to read articles about health?  Health in today’s world full of processed food and sedentary lifestyles should be everyone’s concern, especially those who spend a major portion of their days sitting in front of a computer.

As an ex-overweight IT professional I have seen way too many good techs succumb to the epidemic of the expanded midsection and the inevitable decline in general health.  We simply cannot afford to keep losing the valuble experience of these dedicated individuals to the impending heart attack or stroke.
