“Send From” Multiple Gmail Addresses on the iPhone and iPad

Posted by Scott Jarkoff in Shorts

If you have secondary email addresses tied to your Gmail account, using one of them to “send from” on your iPhone and/or iPad is not a straightforward process. Nick Cernis did the research and figured out a way to make it work, although be prepared for a somewhat tedious process to make it all happen:

The short version is that you just list your email addresses separated by a comma in the Address field of the mail settings on your iPhone/iPad. Sounds simple, but it turns out to be important that you follow certain steps in order, and that you set your Gmail address up as an IMAP account, not a Gmail account. If you’re already utterly confused, read on as I attempt to deconfuddle you.

Nick does an exceptional job breaking down each and every step, presenting screenshots to make it as user-proof as possible. Although nobody has mentioned anything of the sort, I really do hope iPhone OS 4.0 solves this problem. There should not be a need to jump through this many hoops just to setup additional “send from” addresses on the iPhone and/or iPad.

Beat TV tapes John Johnson debunking the myth that Verizon plans to offer iPhones:

The idea of Verizon carrying iPhones didn’t make much sense to begin with when handset competition is mainly tied to cellular provider. We know [for now] that the Verizon iPhone is nothing but a consumer’s pipe dream.

Next iPhone – Touch Sensitive Housing

WIRED speculates:

One big question remaining is the back of the iPhone. Neither Gizmodo nor the Vietnamese blog were able to confirm the exact material, but they described it as a glasslike plastic. Here’s the kicker: An analyst said in January that he’d heard Apple’s next iPhone would feature a touch-sensitive housing similar to that seen on Apple’s multitouch Magic Mouse. We’re willing to guess the next iPhone’s back will detect multitouch gestures so you can control core features such as the music player while the device is still inside your pocket.

Controlling iPhone functions with taps and swipes on the back casing is smartphone technology ahead of its time…

Skype Delays iPhone 3G VoIP Charges

According to Mel Martin of TUAW:

According to the fine print on the Skype iPhone app, free Skype to Skype calls will last all the way until the end of 2010. Yesterday, the date was given as the end of August, but it looks like we’ve all gotten an extension on Skype-to-Skype calling over 3G.

It would appear the outcrying from users has worked to some extent, insofar as the institution of charging has been delayed by about six months. No explanation was offered, but it is not unreasonable to assume this was in response to the many complaints.

I still have to question the need for instituting charges for Skype-to-Skype calls via the 3G network. While Skype does need to make money, every other Skype-to-Skype call is free. Why penalize iPhone users unless the idea is to capitalize on the perception that iPhone users have no problem spending cash?

…I think we can see the writing on the wall that Android is going to dominate iPhone market-share wise which will eventually make it a more attractive platform business-wise.

We’re ringside for a promising smartphone battle. Android vs. iPhone.

Smartphone Web Apps: No Network – No Productivity

TechMiso - Smartphone Web Apps: No Network - No ProductivityEven our gracefully fast cellular internet connections in Japan still present one significant roadblock to accessing data through web-based applications: No network – No productivity.

Can a web-app ever replace a native smartphone app? Not likely without significant enhancements in cellular and Wi-Fi infrastructure.

Take Google Apps for example. We all know that Google is a heavy pusher of their web-based applications. With tools like Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar and that OS-killing Chrome, Google in fact does a great job rolling out it’s web app offerings.

Unfortunately though, Google has a hard time pushing the majority of its web apps without a continuously live internet connection.

apple_iphone_blackberry_pearlDear iPhone and Blackberry users,

I know your phones are awesome. I know that your phones have video editing capabilities and Blackberry Messenger respectively. I know that your phones can do a gajillion things all at once. I know that your phones have their own plans from your providers.

Even so, despite being the Mobile Brat that I am, I do not want to spend every moment with you watching you play with your phone. I do not want to discuss the latest thing that you’ve discovered that your phone can do.

Apple Is The Best And Microsoft Sucks - TechMisoMacintosh is better than Windows, and Microsoft is run by idiots. Appleʼs software is open source whereas Microsoftʼs software is all closed source and therefore it sucks balls. You wonʼt get any friends when using Windows, whereas youʼll be the most popular person in the world when using Mac. Simply said, Mac is so much better than Windows.
