International Google Voice Users Beware: Don’t Upgrade!

Posted by Scott Jarkoff in Shorts

If you are an international Google Voice user then beware of clicking the little “upgrade your account” button from within Google Voice. Doing so may render your ability to access the Google Voice web site obsolete.

If you’re not in the US and you want to add credit to your account, make sure that you DON’T CLICK the “Upgrade your account” button from Google Voice. This feature is only useful if you are in the US, since it lets you get a Google Voice number. Unfortunately, if you click on that button and you’re not in the US, you’ll no longer be able to buy credit.

There does not appear to be an easy way to downgrade your account once you have opted for the upgrade. The Google Operating System article does mention the upgrade may be cancelled by using a U.S. based web proxy server but that is a little cumbersome for the average non-techie internet user.

All is not totally lost however. Although the Google Voice web site itself becomes inaccessible, phone calls initiated from within Gmail still appear to function. Hopefully Google will fix this and simply hide the “upgrade your account” button from international users. Doing so will create less confusion and not cause users to inadvertently prohibit access to their own accounts.

Google Voice for everyone

Google Voice, known previously as GrandCentral, has finally gone live and is accepting sign-ups, but with one caveat: Google Voice is still limited to folks in the USA.

Google Voice Product Managers, Craig Walker and Vincent Paquet:

Over the past year, we’ve introduced a mobile web app, an integrated voicemail player in Gmail, the ability to use Google Voice with your existing number and more. Over a million of you are now actively using Google Voice, and many of the features released over the past year (like SMS to email and our Chrome extension) came as a result of your suggestions, so thanks!

Google Voice is just a great straightforward move by Google that plugs in yet another valuable piece to their unified communications suite. It’s interesting as well to note that in Google’s infographic , Google Voice shows up as a milestone separate from and ‘following’ a VoIP milestone. What’s the message there?

Skype for iOS 4 Coming Soon

Although Steve Jobs showcased Skype for the iPhone back in March, apparently it was not entirely iOS 4 compatible. A version of the application taking advantage of iOS 4 features, such as multitasking support, will be ready soon.

With every update to the iPhone OS (now called iOS), Apple introduces a number of changes to the software. In order to make sure we give you the best experience possible, we need to carry out some additional tests with the final version of iOS 4.

When we’re confident that the app will live up to your high expectations, we’ll make it available for download.

It will be very interesting to see how Skype ends up utilizing the available iOS 4 multitasking APIs. It would certainly be worthwhile to be able to leave Skype running in the background, allowing the application to respond to incoming calls when applicable. Such a feature may ultimately make the iPod Touch a much more attractive device because it ultimately function like a WiFi based VoIP phone.

Skype Delays iPhone 3G VoIP Charges

According to Mel Martin of TUAW:

According to the fine print on the Skype iPhone app, free Skype to Skype calls will last all the way until the end of 2010. Yesterday, the date was given as the end of August, but it looks like we’ve all gotten an extension on Skype-to-Skype calling over 3G.

It would appear the outcrying from users has worked to some extent, insofar as the institution of charging has been delayed by about six months. No explanation was offered, but it is not unreasonable to assume this was in response to the many complaints.

I still have to question the need for instituting charges for Skype-to-Skype calls via the 3G network. While Skype does need to make money, every other Skype-to-Skype call is free. Why penalize iPhone users unless the idea is to capitalize on the perception that iPhone users have no problem spending cash?

Does U.S. Mobile Carrier AT&T Rule All App Store Applications?

Earlier this week the internet was abuzz over Apple rejecting the official Google Voice (GV) iPhone app. This story was quickly followed by Apple removing every GV-enabled app already available in the App Store. The official GV app and all previously approved GV-enabled applications appear to have been removed from all international App Stores. Based on many accounts, the culprit behind this dastardly deed is none other than AT&T. Does this mean that AT&T, the U.S. mobile carrier, has veto authority across all U.S. and international App Store applications?
